Crop rotation is the practice of growing a series of dissimilar types of crops in the same area in sequential seasons for various benefits such as to avoid the build up of pathogens and pests that often occurs when the crop is continuously cropped. Crop rotation also seeks to a balance the fertility demands of various crops to avoid excess depletion of soil nutrients.Crop rotation can also improves soil structure and fertility by alternating deep rooted and shallow rooted plants. . If the first crop is short-rooted, the subsequent crop should be medium or long-rooted so that the soil nutrients are absorbed from different layers in successive seasons, giving each layer, in turn, a chance to regenerate.
